Headphones

Headphones are a pair of small loudspeaker drivers worn on or around the head over a user's ears. They are electroacoustic transducers, which convert an electrical signal to a corresponding sound.

Bluetooth Speakers

Bluetooth speakers work by using short-range radio waves (RF) to transmit data to and from your Bluetooth-enabled device (such as a smartphone, a tablet, or a computer).

What are Wireless Earbuds?

Wireless earbuds have become increasingly popular as consumers move past their wired predecessors. Such earbuds are portable speakers that fit inside people’s ears and connect to any audio-producing device (e.g., a phone or computer) using Bluetooth audio technology. Wired earbuds, by contrast, use a cable to attach to devices that have an input jack. Wireless earbuds present certain advantages over wired earbuds and are especially popular in fitness activities, during which wired earbuds may be inconvenient or hinder exercising.

Components of Wireless Earbuds

The Chip
After removing the screws that hold the drivers into place, you’ll start to see a few wires - and a chip that basically contains the tech the wireless headphones require. In these particular headphones, the chip contains a Bluetooth transmitter and receiver, drawing power from the battery.
Speaker Components
The most basic components of a speaker are the voice coil, magnet, and cone. The voice coil oscillates back and forth due to Faraday's law of induction because of the magnet and an applied alternating current. This oscillation, when connected to the cone, produces pressure waves by moving air at the frequency of the applied signal. This is the basic functionality of a speaker and is the functioning mechanism behind the Bluetooth speakers in each earbud above.
Battery
The capacitor had a signal conditioner atop it, likely for voltage or current regulation. The reason is that supercapacitors are supposed to retain their charge for hundreds of thousands of cycles, and this one went from 8 hours to 2 hours in a little over a year.

Features of Wireless Earbuds

🟠 Accessory Charging  – It’s not a very common feature, but some charging cases have extra-large batteries and a built-in USB-A charging port that lets you recharge a phone or almost any other device. Whether having this option is worth carrying the extra bulk is a personal decision, but it doesn’t add much cost to the earbuds, so price likely won’t be a factor.

🟠Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) – Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses the earbuds’ onboard microphones to detect external sounds and attempts to cancel them out by producing sounds with an inverse phase. There can be a big difference in ANC effectiveness from one model of noise-canceling earbuds to another, with more expensive earbuds usually doing a better job than lower-priced models.

🟠Battery LifeThis is easily the most variable feature from one model of true wireless earbuds to another. We’ve seen some that last as little as three hours per charge and only 12 hours with the charging case, while others can last as long as 13 hours per charge and up to 48 hours when you include the charging case. More expensive earbuds often last longer, but there are exceptions to this.

🟠 Bluetooth Codecs (AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, etc.) – As a wireless technology, Bluetooth always compresses digital music to transmit it to your earbuds. Very high-quality earbuds compensate for this with top-notch signal processing, audio drivers, and amplifiers. But it’s also possible to moderately increase the sound quality through the use of Bluetooth codecs like aptX, aptX HD, or LDAC.

🟠Bluetooth Range – Bluetooth wireless range is another highly variable feature. Some models lose their connection after about 10 feet while others can go much farther. For the best possible wireless range, look for earbuds that are considered Class 1 Bluetooth devices – these have the longest range you can get

🟠Charging Case –  This is your earbuds’ home when they’re not in your ears, and there are a lot of features to consider. How many extra charges does the battery hold? How small/pocketable is it? Does it have wireless charging? Does it use USB-C or MicroUSB for cable charging? Is it easy to remove and replace the earbuds? Does the hinge mechanism seem flimsy? Would it survive a fall onto a hard surface? What about water resistance?

🟠Driver Type –  Dynamic or Balanced Armature
When it comes to earbuds, the two main technologies for producing the sound you hear are dynamic drivers (which look like teeny-tiny speakers) and balanced armature (BA) drivers (which look like rectangular boxes with a hole at one end).

🟠Earfins (Earwings, Stabilizers) –  Some earbuds – especially those aimed at athletes – include earfins or earwings in addition to various sizes of eartips. These create an even more secure fit than the eartips alone. Some models treat the earfins as optional, while others make them a requirement. Some folks find earwings uncomfortable, so if you don’t need the extra stability they offer, you may want to consider earbuds that don’t have them or that give you the option of not using them.

Benefits Of Wireless Earbuds

Less Likely to Fall Out

Since wireless earbuds - as the name suggests - don’t have any wires at all, you’re not going to accidentally tug them out. Wires also add a lot of weight to your earbuds, which is another reason they tend to fall out, and another reason true wireless earbuds are more likely to stay put. In fact, our earbuds’ fit is so snug that it physically blocks external sounds for excellent passive noise isolation so you can pump up the jams even if there’s excessive background noise.

Ideal for Fitness

For one, you don’t have to be tethered to your phone - literally. If you’re in the gym, you can keep your phone in your locker rather than in your pocket or on an armband. But even on neighborhood and trail runs, you’ll love not having those headphone wires whipping at your face and neck anymore. Many true wireless earbuds are also sweat resistant. So you don’t have to worry about your earbuds while you’re putting in the work - they’ll be just fine.

Great Battery Life

Traditional Bluetooth earbuds - the type that have a wire connecting one earbud to the other - have to be plugged into a cable and charged every 4-8 hours or so. True wireless earbuds include a USB-C charging case so they’re always ready to rock.

No More Tangles

Cables, if properly stored, don’t get tangled. The problem, though, is that earbud cables - especially the short between-the-ear cables on so-called “wireless” earbuds - are so awkwardly short that you can’t wrap them neatly, no matter how you try.

Tap Controls

It was a game-changer when the first wired earbuds came with single, double and even triple-tap controls to answer calls, pause/play songs and skip or go back a track.

How to Clean Your Wireless Earbuds?

🟠Hold the left or right earbud in your hand

🟠Flip the outer shell of the ear tip.

🟠Gently tug the outer shell away from the earbud to remove it.

🟠Repeat the same steps for the other earbud.

🟠Clean the ear tips using warm water

🟠Unlike earbuds themselves, it's safe to use running water and a mild detergent like dish soap to clean detached silicone ear tips.

🟠Wipe down the earbuds with a lightly damp microfiber cloth. Do not use a cleaning solution or soap, and don't over-saturate the microfiber cloth.

🟠Let all parts dry completely before reassembling your earbuds and placing them back in their charging case.
